Thrifty Adventures

This weeks Thrifty Adventures find takes us back to the Treasure Island Flea Market! I found this cute cookie jar for $10. A little more than I might spend at a yard sale, but good for a flea market. This is one of those things that I got home and thought, where the heck am I going to put this. Thankfully tomorrow (which is actually 3 days ago) I will have a yellow kitchen and this cookie jar will look phenomenal in it!

What did you find this week? Link up and share! Be sure to check out Katie Jean to see what thrifty finds she may have had this week!

I hate cars.

Have I ever told you I hate cars? I mean I get it, I need one. It gets me from here to there. It allows me to take fun trips. It gives me freedom. That doesn't mean I have to like all that goes into it though. Gas is expensive, regular maintenance is expensive, insurance is expensive, car repairs are expensive, registration is expensive. It just goes on and on. I figure I put more money into my car than I do my child and it doesn't even hug me and kiss me goodnight each day.

Today I took my car into the shop. It will likely be very expensive, especially since I am writing how much I hate it. See, my car does that shit just to spite me. Here's to hoping that I won't have to sell myself in order to get it operating correctly.

In case you too need to vent about your car, I found a website in which you can do just that. Boy there really is everything online these days.

Whoa Nelly!

Many of you have seen this already if you follow me on Facebook, but for those that don't I wanted to share as well! I've talked about Leyton and his patience with walking. While he took his first steps a while ago he really has taken his time in figuring out he can do it more. This weekend he took to his feet. He's still crawling 90% of the time, but there are times when he just decides he is going to be on his feet and nothing can stop him.

He can curse me later for putting him in a diaper on the internet!

More Craftiness!!!

Well, my craft fun didn't end on Saturday! I woke up Sunday morning and remembered that the farmer's market was taking place under the freeway so I took off with Leyton to go and buy some produce. After we got all our yummies I then remembered that there was a new craft fair/flea market happening in Sacramento on the 4th Sunday. If you've been to the antiques under the freeway on the 2nd Sunday then the group that does that is now doing a craft fair/flea market in the same place.
It was super early when we got there, but they let us come in anyway and we checked out what booths were set up. There was a ton of stuff I liked but I limited myself to one purchase, a floor pillow from Rusties Granny Pet Beds!
This thing is GORGEOUS and is filled with plastic bags. Can I just tell you it is soooo comfortable?! We added it to our play room so we have another pillow to lounge on while we play with Leyton. Not only that but Paul and Tamina were just about the nicest people I have ever met. I hope to get them at a GETty Crafty sometime!

So, if you are local, be sure to go and check out the Sacramento Craft and Flea next month!

Treasure Island Flea Market

Today Kate and I decided to head to the Bay Area to check out the new Treasure Island Flea Market. We loaded Leyton in the car and headed out! The start was rough. We saw a pack of dogs mauling another little dog and Leyton barfed all over himself in the car. A terrible smelly barf that lingered for the rest of the drive.

We didn't give up or let it get us down.

We arrived and all the worries were gone. First of all the place is gorgeous!! I haven't been to Treasure Island before, and boy do I know I will go again. The weather was also gorgeous. Once we started walking around it only got better.

The flea market was a perfect combination of crafts and vintage items. I'm just going to touch on my crafty items because I want to save the vintage items for Thrifty Thursday! I got both of my crafty items from the same booth!

The first was a sign to hang in Leyton's room with none other than his name!
They had a ton of different styles of each letter and you could customize it however you liked. Kate got one too for Getty and both came out soo cute.

The same booth also had greeting cards and I just about died when I saw this one.
I got a couple more which I can't share yet because one is a gift for my buddy Carol Browne. To top it off they have gourmet mobile food trucks parked there so once you are done shopping you can have a DELICIOUS lunch. I opted for some garlic noodles, oh man, sooo yummy!!

All in all it was a great day. If I had found nothing it would have still been made perfect by getting Kate to model this hat!
This happens each month on the last Saturday and Sunday and next month is free admission so I highly recommend you go check it out!

Thursday Funday!

Yesterday I got to take a half day off work and can I just say what a FUN day I had! This weekend Nascar is at Infineon Raceway and the car haulers paraded through the streets of downtown Sacramento. The hubby, kiddo and I had lunch first....with a delicious Sangria I might add! Then we headed down the street to watch the trucks roll through. Leyton did not like it at first because they were all honking their horns. Once I moved away from the street and found a nice place in the shade he loved it. Plus, with my new phone I was able to get some fun shots of us together!
After Leyton napped I decided to take him on his first trip to the pool. I love the water and I have been so hopeful that Leyton would too. The fact that he hates baths was making me nervous though. Well, this baby officially loves the water!!! He splashed, stuck his face in and just had a great time. I can't wait to go back again!

I officially deem yesterday as Funday!!

Thrifty Adventures!!!

Welcome back!! Sorry about that hiatus but with GETty Crafty things got a little sidetracked and I wanted to be sure to give vendors their due. Plus, I sure wasn't having too many opportunities to thrift but I'm ready to get back on the horse.

I did take a trip to Deseret Industries last week and was so happy with my find. Of course, I can't just tell you what it is...I have to tell you a story first. About a year ago I went to the 2nd Sunday antiques under the freeway here in Sacramen
to. It's such a fun place to visit and tons of stuff to look at, but I'll be honest when I say that most of the time I go there I am just looking. I find prices to be crazy at a good majority of the vendors. Maybe it's because I see stuff I see at thrift stores, garage sales and Craigslist for priced much higher. I do find it's a great place to get ideas of things to look for.

Back to my find!!!
I scored these four metal Sesame Street cars at Deseret and they cost me 25 cents each. When I took that first trip to the antiques under the freeway I saw the Big Bird popcorn car and wanted to take it home.....the vendor wanted $9 for it!!!! Needless to say I am happy I did because I now have 4 cars and only spent a dollar!

How about you? What did you find this week? Do you have good stories of seeing something somewhere and passing only to find it cheaper later? Link up! Be sure to pop in on Katie Jean and say hello. She might not have a Thrifty Adventure up because she is busy opening up a new shop.

See you again next week!

The final weekend find!!

There was something that I knew I was buying before I showed up at GETty Crafty. Something that had been on my mind since the last GETty Crafty occurred. For the most part, I do consider myself an impulse buyer. I've tried to be better at this and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. The thing is, I'm not a "big spender" impulse's the little things that get me.

There have been times in my life when I have seen something that I REALLY wanted. For the reason of price, I have walked away. Unfortunately, those are usually one of a kind items. Things I can't go back for later. Things that haunt me. I can still remember a sweater that I found in San Francisco when I was in JUNIOR HIGH that I didn't get and/or my mom didn't get and we both still talk about how that sweater should have been purchased.

Last year I was blown away by a vendor that was new to the craft show scene. She came all the way from the Bay Area and her name is Bottle of Clouds. When I saw her booth it was AMAZING. She was nailing it on so many levels. Her merchandise was out of this world, her marketing pieces even better. I took one look at her booth and knew that she could really make it in the crafting world if she put her stuff out there more. Not only that but Min is just about the nicest person you could ever meet.

I bought a couple things at her booth last year, but it was the one thing I didn't buy that haunted me. She had a purse that I fell in love with at first site. It was priced higher than I spend on purses and so while I looked at it and was in love I knew I wouldn't buy it. The reason for its high was made by her Mom. Hand made that is. Not in the sense that we would think where her mom thought up the design and brought out her sewing machine to hand make the purse. This purse was hand made in the LITERAL sense of hand. No machine was used, it was all sewn by hand.

I regretted not buying that purse to my core. I knew the MOMENT that Bottle of Clouds signed up for the show that I would buy that purse if she still had it. I even sent her an email asking if it was still available and much to my excitement the answer was, "Yes!" I arrived at the fair almost giddy because I knew I would be reunited with that bag and this time I would be taking it home.

On the way to the ATM I stopped at Min's booth to see if she remembered to bring the bag. She said yes, brought it out and then told me she was sorry she didn't wrap it. I told her no biggie, that I would just carry it! I didn't need a bag for my bag. Only what I didn't get at the time was Min was GIVING me this purse. Her mom wanted me to have it and would accept no money for it. People, I welled up right there on the spot. It was one of the most monumental gifts I have ever been given in my life. It quite simply shook me to my core.Since the day of the show I have been carrying this purse and it is perfect on every level. It has just the right amount of pockets inside, it is the perfect size, it fits on my shoulder wonderfully. I dare say it is the perfect purse. I will carry it for my lifetime and have no desire for another bag.

Thank you Min and thank you to your Mom, whose name I don't even know. This bag means the world to me. You are both amazingly talented women!!!

Please visit Bottle of Clouds by clicking here. I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

Weekend Finds Part Eight!!

It's been a long time since I have added anything to the bedroom wall of art. I knew that I would visit the Scatterbox booth to pick out a new print. There were so many great prints to choose from but I went with these two.Well, to be honest the one on the right is for my girls at Honey Agency (Hi RP and Megs!). Now I just need to find the perfect frame for my Freak Out print!

You can shop from Scatterbox by clicking here! Or, check out Tina Jett's blog for some good reading!

Happy Father's Day

Today is your second Father's Day and I can only imagine it feels different than the first when we were just very scared, very tired new parents trying to figure out what the hell we were doing. While still tired and still trying to figure out what we are doing, I think for both of us the fear is gone. Here is what I know. You are already an amazing daddy to our little boy. I have heard so many say how much the daddy steps up to the plate as the baby gets older. I don't feel that with you as you have been rounding each and every base with me. You know when I'm at my wits end and you take over. You are never fearful or nervous to be with the little munchkin....and if you are then you hide it very well. You were meant to be a father and learned from a pretty good one yourself.
Here is what I also know. Our son ADORES you! He squeals with delight when you come into a room. He smiles at you like no one else. He dances with you when you dance. He grows closer to you with each passing day and I don't think I will ever be able to call him a "Mama's Boy."

Thank you for being my best friend, thank you for being the best husband I could have ever asked for and thank you for being an amazing father to our wonderful child. I couldn't do it all without you.

Weekend Finds Part Seven!!

Wow, I'm still working through my finds!!! I have a couple more to go so hopefully you are loving the items I got so far. My next find was also for myself and was made by Maria of Plants N Rocks. She has the most amazing unique containers filled with a cute variety of succulents and plants. I admired these and there SUPER LOW prices at the last show but was too busy to buy anything. This year I knew I had to have one, so this sweet little guy came home with me.Maria doesn't have a store so if you see her at a show, be sure to give her some love and buy a plant to take home with you!

Weekend Finds Part 6

Time to feature something for me!!! I am a HUGE FAN of pottery. I try to buy pieces for myself through out the year, mostly from Gary, but I also love when I find someone local. Finding pottery in Sacramento is TOUGH. There are very few potters, or at least that is my impression because when it comes time to book some for shows they always have other commitments.

I was happy to include JTB Ceramics and even happier when he had gorgeous pottery! I decided to purchase an over-sized drinking glass. My hope is to one day have at least half of my drinking glasses be handmade pottery. It is just so beautiful and almost calming to drink out of. You can contact JTB Ceramics by clicking on the Facebook page here.

Weekend Finds Part Five

Obviously you are probably catching on that many of my purchases had to do with Leyton! Since this was a craft fair for a child's charity we had quite a few vendors geared towards kids. This was the first time I've been able to shop at a craft fair for my own kiddo and I just couldn't help myself.

Leyton is absolutely in love with the play kitchen at Kayla's house and it's on my list of things to get for him. We had a new vendor called The Felted Pear that made all felt food items. I could have bought one of EVERYTHING! Instead I just got him some fruit and veggies and will add more once we have the kitchen. Be sure to check out their website by clicking here...I just about die over the milk carton, butter and eggs!!!

More important!!!!

As you all know the Getty Owl Foundation is an important part of my life and I try to do everything in my power to help all organizations that are fighting Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Right now Sophia's Cure is taking part in the Vivint Gives Back Project which could ultimately get them a lot of money. They currently sit 5th and we can all help them get this much needed money by voting daily. It's VERY easy to do, no fancy registrations. So please take time each day to place a vote here.

That's not all though!!! I'm going to push my luck today and ask you to place two votes. A couple years back someone new moved in down the street and within days of his arrival there was a news crew out front filming him while he biked. I guess I was being a nosey neighbor but I hit the web to try and find out what the deal was. It was then that I was "introduced" to Kyle Bryant. At 17 years old Kyle was diagnosed with a genetic neuromuscular disorder called Friedreich's Ataxia and it is slowly killing him. He was biking across the USA to raise money and attend a conference. He did this again and last year, with a team of three others, he participated in the RAAM. The internet is a weird place, this was my neighbor but in the few years he lived down the street I learned more about him online than our few front yard conversations. Here is what I will tell you though. Kyle is one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. Like the Storms, he decided that he was not going to give up and has in turn accomplished so many amazing things. He is someone that can make me weep whenever I read about what he is doing. Not because I am sad for him, but because I am motivated by him and he makes me want to be a better person and live a better life.

A documentary is being made called The Ataxian and is based on Kyle and the ride.

This film needs your help though and is currently trying to win 50K in the Pepsi Refresh Project. You can go to the site daily to vote, you can text a vote daily AND if you drink Pepsi be sure to get the Power Votes codes.

Good luck Kyle and Sophia's Cure! I'm really pulling for both of you!

Weekend Finds Part Four

My next find was only right next door at one of my favorite plushie vendors.....Lauren Smash Toys! Lauren makes the cutest animals and I knew before the show started that I would be getting one to add to Leyton's small collection.Such a cute little guy and he has already found some playtime in Leyton's crib. Check out Lauren's other items by clicking here! She's also having a great contest on her blog and you can win you own plushie!

Weekend Finds Part Three

Next up is this adorable monster that I got from the appropriately named Monster and Me. I absolutely love funky monster plushies and had to get one of these for Leyton in his crib. I think the first words out of my mouth when I saw their basket of monsters was, "Are you serious, these are only $8?!" They seriously had the cutest monsters and at that price I should have bought a ton of them, but I have to save some room in the crib for Leyton. Not only that but they gave me the most adorable business card holder that I am now using for my Getty Owl business cards.

Check out their shop by clicking here!

13 Months Old

This is the face that Leyton made today when I told him we'd be doing this for at least another year.Classic. Yep, today my baby is 13 months old. He has a total of 6 teeth in his mouth, four on the top, two on the bottom. He goes to be at 7pm and wakes up at 5am. If you hand him a phone of any kinds he says "Hi Dada" and then proceeds to ramble on and on, occasionally laughing during the one sided conversation. He says hi, dad, daddy, dada, mama, doggy, vroom vroom (for car obviously), Nina, nana (for banana), E-I-E-I-O whenever the song comes on, shhh, hot, choo choo, uh-uh, uh-oh and sometimes chug jug. I'm sure there are more words that I'm not even thinking of. He is a ravenous eater and you have to be careful how much food you put on his tray because he shoves it all in his mouth. He loves drinking out of his water bottle with a straw and absolutely refuses to use a sippy cup. He wears anywhere from 18 months to 2T and has a size 4.5 shoe. He stands on his own, but is still very hesitant about walking. He's taken a couple steps, but always gives up and drops to his knees. It's the one area in his life where he is not reckless. He now hates taking baths so will likely be a dirty baby all summer. His favorite thing to do still is just be outside. He also absolutely squeals in delight when his daddy comes home from work.

So, I know that's more than you've ever wanted to know about my kid...but it's a good chronicle for me and he has a grandma out there that is eating up every word of that.I love you baby and promise that we will stop taking these pictures no later than 18 years of age.

Weekend Finds Part Two

My second purchase of the day was from Nerdy Dog! I was lucky enough to visit the Nerdy Dog shop before the craft fair to drop off some posters and post cards so I got a chance to scope out items I was interested in. I knew right away that I would be getting Whisky a new collar. One that would make him look like the sophisticated goof ball he is.

I present to you the necktie collar! Doesn't it just make him look smarter? I mean he totally doesn't look like a dog that would eat his own poop now does he?!

Then Caitlyn of Nerdy Dog had to go and make dog bones that look like mustaches. I mean, I had no choice but to pick some of these up! If you have a dog, pick them something up from the Nerdy Dog website by clicking here. If you are local go and visit them at their super cute shop on 1118 19th St. Sacramento, CA 95811.

Weekend Finds Part One!

The 2nd Annual GETty Crafty took place this weekend and was filled to the brim with the most amazing vendors. Was the show Did I try my best.....yes. That is really all I can do. I learned so much this weekend and am confident that the next show will be even better!!!

There was a pretty steady amount of traffic, but not as much as I hoped for. With all the advertising we did on radio, two televisions spots, printed information and the wildfire that spread online I was shocked that there weren't more people. I also teach water aerobics on the weekend and learned that on Saturday the pool was empty. I'm completely certain that people just had a ton going on this weekend. School just got out, celebratory trips are taking place, graduations and other events. The other factor was those that were out weren't buying. They were just looking at vendors and enjoying the sunshine. Sadly there is nothing I can do about that other than move the event to a time when I know people are in a buying mood.....the holidays.

I try to do my part at each show and walk around checking out the vendors and buying this and that. So, I thought I would spend the next couple days featuring the items I got this weekend. If you didn't make it out to the show, maybe you can check out the shops online and pick something up!!

My first purchase of that day was from The Village Goose. Kay has an affliction for vintage letter press and makes the most lovely creations! She also has her booth set up so you can make items as well and pick them up before you leave the show. I have purchased from her many times and knew I wanted to add to my collection. Since I already have my name, which she kindly gave to me last year, I wanted to add the rest of my family. I also have an old letterpress drawer and she made the words so they fit perfectly and are hanging on my wall.Thank you Kay! It was wonderful having you at another show and I look forward to seeing you again!! Don't forget to click here to find out more about The Village Goose!

When it got wet, it surprisingly looked like this. Then it started to fall out, only it was growing as fast as it was falling out. The new hair growing in was lighter and straight as a board, giving him what would be know as his "Baby Donald Draper" hair style. As he gets older, it gets curlier and curlier. What we discovered is after a hot day in the sun and a little bit of sweating the hair looks like this. Now he looks more like a stoned surfer and I LOVE IT!

Oh no, here she goes again!

I do my best to keep my blog upbeat, keep it fun, try to make you laugh, just be a regular old goofball. At the same time I also try to keep it real. I let you know what's going on in my life and occasionally that means I vent. I mean, things aren't great all the time you know?! ha! So, let's get started.
This is my house. I have lived here for 11 years. I love my house. I take care of my house. I also rent my house. Yes, I have been a renter of the SAME house for 11 years. Some might call that crazy, but I just don't have any urgency or strong desire to own a home. I've seen so many own homes and have either had to walk from them or are completely upside down in them and so I just don't see the appeal. I pay my rent and call it a day.

It's not always that simply though. What comes with renting a house is a landlord. We will call my landlord Martha because, that is what we call her even though that's not her name. She is a nice woman that means well, but lord can this woman make me bat shit crazy. So crazy that the easiest way for me to deal with her is to just avoid her. What that means is I live with things. I live with a window that has been cracked since I moved in. I live with an oven that gets dangerously hot on the outside. I live with mold that at times grows on the walls. Sometimes it's just too difficult to deal with her and so I either take care of things myself or just live with it.

Now let's get to the point. The point that will give you an insight into why she might drive me bat shit crazy. Let's see that picture again shall we?
There it is again, my house. Yesterday I received a call. A call from Martha letting me know we had an issue and need to talk about it to come to a conclusion about the issue. That issue is her disappointment at how the yard looks. Umm, are you shaking your head yet? Here...I'll show you the picture again.
Yep, there is that shitty yard that we don't take care of. The one that she might have to hire a gardener for and raise our rent unless we can come to an agreement about it. Do you see it? If so, let me know, because I don't have a fucking clue what she is talking about.
