Hot Stuff

Each year Bill and I try to do something special in the garden in Davis. We've grown pickles and popcorn, but this year wanted to try something new. We went with horseradish! We planted it loooonnnnng ago, but this weekend it was finally time to harvest. Basically they are roots that you have to dig out of the ground. Once you have it the fun begins. First you have to peel the roots:
Once they are all peeled and clean you dice them up into manageable pieces. This is when things start to get a little hot in the air. See, what activates the heat in horseradish is dicing and chopping.
Once it's all chopped up you throw it in the food processor with a little water and blend it up. That's when you have to decide how hot you want it. To make it just wait up to four minutes. At 4 minutes you apparently achieve maximum heat. After it sits for your selected time (we went with 4 minutes by the way!) you add in some white vinegar and salt and mix again. And voila...
you have horseradish! It really just ends up looking like diced up garlic, but trust don't want to put your face anywhere near it. By the end of blending my nose and chest were so cleared out from the fumes I forgot that I had ever been sick! Can't wait to make a yummy pot roast and whip up some horseradish cream sauce to go on top of it!!

It's that time of year again...

time for me to fight off the ugly chest cold! I was lucky enough to not get it last year, instead I just dealt with a blood clot. This year, not so lucky. I got sick almost three weeks ago and last Sunday the cough started. By Thanksgiving I was coughing up lungs and feeling as if I'd been rapidly punched in the stomach. Yesterday I decided it was time to head to the doctor. I was given a breathing treatment and prescribed a couple inhalers and some cough medicine with codeine. One of the inhalers was the powdery stuff called Advair.

It works great and I finally feel like a can breath again. The bummer part is apparently my insurance feels that this medicine isn't worth covering so this month supply cost me $125. I now know that the cost of breathing precious air is just over $100. Thank goodness I only need a month supply or I might have to hold my breath a bit more.

Black Friday

For the first time ever I participated in Black Friday. Wendy and I decided that we had never done it before and both had a desire to go to Kohl's. We didn't have that big mapped out shop to shop trip plan, just Kohl's.....which opened at 4am! Here is what we looked like at 4am:Darn that Wendy had to go and put makeup on. I myself threw on a hat and that was about the extent of it! When we got to Kohl's there was a line outside.
The line actually went to the right quite a ways too, but we were not concerned. After the doors opened at 4 and we trampled a couple elderly getting inside we scored some really good deals! No, we didn't trample any elderly and I feel really angry at those that can't settle themselves down when going for a Black Friday shopping trip. All in all it was a fun experience and I'll probably never do it again. I did get some good deals though! I think it's called Black Friday cause it sure is dark out when you go shopping at 4am!

Gobble Gobble

It's been a good thanksgiving, delicious food and good company. Typically we would be in Olympia getting rowdy with Bill's family. This year we're at home and have a long quiet weekend. It's just not the same. Especially after we get pictures like this...

Is it a yam bird? We'll never know. We do know that turkey day just isn't the same without the Fudurichs, Weavers and Monthies.

Happy Thanksgiving!

You want me to smell where?

This past weekend I bought the People Magazine Sexiest Man issue. Come on...they are sexy and they are men, I just couldn't pass it up. The issue was definitely filled with all the obvious hotties, but then I got to a section that caught me off guard. That would be the Scratch and Sniff section! No kidding, there is a scratch and sniff section in the issue where the guy tells you what his favorite scent is and then you can scratch a certain area on the page and smell that scent for yourself. Scents range from grass, cologne and vanilla. It was funny and obscene all at the same time. All I have to say is thank goodness the Michael Phelp's page didn't say "The smell of my speedo after a swim." I'd love to see the women in the check stand smelling that portion of the page!

When life hands you lemons...

Sometimes something bad happens and it really sucks. It makes you angry and you stomp around and pout and wish that you could throw something. Then suddenly the new fridge arrives and you realize, "Hey, I really like this new fridge....thank you fridge gods for letting my old fridge crap out!"
OK, so maybe for you it isn't a fridge but you get where I'm coming from. The new fridge was installed yesterday and I absolutely love it! It has so much more space and I can actually see what is in the freezer. There is also water and ice on the outside. Here I thought it was a big deal when the hubby installed the ice maker. Now I not only have ice, but I have CRUSHED ice! Oh man, there is nothing better than crushed ice in a soda. I also really dig the black color. It definitely stands out and I find myself walking into the kitchen and thinking "Whoa, there's the fridge," but I think I'll get used to it. Now, if I could only feel the same about my camera as I do about my fridge. I guess perhaps I will once I get a new camera!

For the stud in your life!

I don't make many things for the men out there. Most of my crafts are of the girly nature. Well, that's all about to change right now! My physical therapist was intersted in a scarfette, but he hadn't actually seen one and I just felt they were a bit too feminine. So, I decided to do a modified masculine version.

I proudly introduce you to the "studette:"

Ok, it's really just a cowl but when you give something it's own name it makes it feel so much more special. I used this great grey tweed looking yarn and made a second one in a brown tweed, which my physical therapist quickly bought up. I've added these to Etsy so if there is a stud in your life that needs a studette for Christmas don't forget to buy from me! I have a feeling I'll be making one of these for myself soon.

Well, the turkey festivities went off without a hitch. The food was excellent if I do say so myself. I have firmly decided that any recipe you find on the Pioneer Woman will make people want to give you hugs and tell you how wonderful you are. The pecan pie was heavenly and one of Bill's friends literally ate half of the pie! It was just all delicious and went off perfectly. As for the rest of the weekend I can't so that went as smoothly. It started with a busted camera. I dropped my camera in the kitchen while trying to take pictures of delicious pies, but my fingers were probably too covered in butter. The lense was out and when the camera hit the floor the lense popped off. I tried taking it in and was told it would cost more to repair than it would to get a new camera. So, now I need to add a camera to my Christmas list. Anyone have any good recommendations for a good digi??

The weekend ended with a busted fridge! Why things have to go from perfect pies to busted refrigerators is beyond me. Out we headed on Sunday to shop for a new fridge. We decided on this sub zero one:

Hahahahah! Yeah right! This thing probably costs as much as my car AND would take up at least a third of my kitchen. The only chances of me ever scoring something like this would be to be given it on Oprah's Favorite Things show and the chances of that are slim! We actually went with a nice side by side fridge/freezer in black. We thought the black would make it look more classy. Actually we went with the black because it was the one that was on sale! It is bigger than our current non working fridge and has an ice maker AND a water dispenser. We're really moving up in the world.

This evening we are having our annual turkey party. Basically it's a pre-thanksgiving with our friends. This party got out of hand for a while and was up to over 40 people. This can be good, because you see that you have alot of friends...but it can be bad when you live in a small home in East Sacramento. So, we slimmed it down this year and have just about a dozen of our peeps coming over. For this evenings menu I will be making: stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and wild rice casserole, whisky glazed carrots, pecan pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake. I couldn't decided on a dessert so I went with four instead. Bill will be working on the smoked turkey. Ahhhhh, there is nothing liked smoked turkey!

Going doooowwwwwnnn.....

I had my final, hopefully, orthopedic surgeon appointment yesterday. I finally got the full release and was basically told that the knee looks good and is just going to have to run it's course. The ortho doesn't need to see me again unless I do more damage to it later. Let's all cross our fingers that never happens! The ortho did want to know what I have trouble with still. Probably the biggest thing is stairs. Going up is not too bad, but going down is no fun. I have to take it stair by stair which takes forever and makes me feel awkward. The ortho said, "Well, hopefully you don't have to deal with too many stairs!" This was apparently his way of cursing me. Kind of like when someone says "Break a leg!" and you do break your leg.

I got to the office after my appointment and settled into work. Not an hour later the fire alarm went off. There was one of those practice things where people sport those ridiculous orange vests and everyone mingles in the parking lot. This wouldn't be a big deal except I work on the 6th floor...the top floor of the building. Thank god I didn't try to wear heels yesterday or I would have been going down all six flights on my ass!

What the wordle?!

I discovered this cool little gadget from the Carol Browne blog. It's called Wordle. You tell Wordle your website and it randomly pulls words off your site that you use frequently. The bigger the word, the more frequently you use it on your site. Here's what the PillsPlace Wordle looks like:

Is anyone else noticing something on my Wordle? I sure did. It all started with how large the word "Pregnant" was and then just got worse when the next words I spotted were bottles, kids, baby, babysitters and deliver! I have no children, and am definitely not pregnant but apparently I like to talk about having kids a bunch. Jeez! Luckily my most popular word is "Going." So, let's use that in a sentence shall we? I'm not going to be having babies very soon.

P.S. Clicking on the Wordle will make it bigger since this non-pregnant dork can't figure out how to do that on her own.

Let me start by saying sorry to all the fellas out there. You may want to stop reading now. Something I have always been fascinated with is pregnant women. We're talking from the time I was very young, maybe around 5 or 6 years old. Luckily it wasn't in that I want to have a baby at 12 sort of way!
I can remember being at a babysitters house and they were watching a child being born on Nova or something. All the other kids were off doing their own thing. I was GLUED to that television. I had never seen anything so fascinating in my life. I decided right then and there that when I grew up I would deliver babies. From that point on I was drawn to pregnant women. I'm one of those freaks that wants to touch your stomach. I want to hear about all of it....every last gory detail. I don't get freaked out, I don't lose my desire to have babies myself in fact the exact opposite happens. I look forward to being pregnant. I know it isn't going to be a bed of roses, I'm not delusional, but I still think it is going to be one of the most spectacular times of my life.
I felt that even more today. My girlfriend Victoria is going to have a baby pretty darn soon. She had the opportunity to get an ultrasound done. This was not your typical everyday flat run of the mill ultrasound...this was a 4D ultrasound. The results are amazing, words to describe really! This is her baby girl Joslyn at 32 weeks:

Man oh man! If those don't make one's clock start ticking I don't know what will. I think my alarm is going off. For now, I will just hit the snooze button though and stop looking at these photos!

The beat of my own drum.

Almost a month ago I scored myself the new Guitar Hero World Tour for the Wii. This was the whole package that came with guitar, drums and the mic. It took a while to give it a try but last weekend I took my turn on the guitar. I wasn't all that good. In fact, when I tried to move from Beginner to Easy I got boo'd off the stage and bottles were thrown at my head. I haven't picked up the guitar since. Recently I decided to give the drums a try. I thought it best to go beginner at first, but holey heck...has anyone ever done that for more than two songs? My thigh and butt were on FIRE! It was the best workout they've seen in a long time. Try pushing the kick drum constantly through "Band on the Run" and you'll see where I'm coming from. I decided that I'd move onto the easy setting. It was tough, but I wasn't half bad! I totally dug it. I didn't get thrown off the stage once. I'm going to have to give the drums a couple more rounds for sure. If I don't get any better then I'm going to pick up the microphone and everyone better watch out cause I have a feeling that is where I will let my superstar geek flag fly!

It's stuck!

Today there is a frog lodged deep in my throat which is preventing every other word from coming out. How does this happen? I haven't even coughed all that much. Please let this cold go away soon!

When cakes go wrong.....

I have become addicted to a new blog. It's called Cake Wrecks and it can be completely summed up by it's name. Once you look at this site you will never walk into a grocery store again without going to the bakery department to check out the cakes that are available. I highly suggest that when you have some time you take a look at this site and dig deep into it's archives. You will be laughing so hard you will cry. Here is a just a sampling of what you might see, and I have to admit if it weren't for how RIDICULOUS this is it would be impressive!

Um yes, that is cake...and yes the bride looked exactly like the cake. There's nothing like a wedding where everyone gets a piece of the bride now is there!

Oh what a week!

It's one of those occasions where Pills Place is going to jump over a couple days as if they never existed. See, you say you are going to do Nablopomo when you already blog everyday and this is the kind of thing that happens! This week has been a heck of a week. It started with some theft in the neighborhood, then I got sick as a dog, then my dog got sick. I think I cursed him by thinking "I'm sick as a dog." Where the heck did that phrase come from anyway?

So, I'm still under the weather now. I feel OK and then feel horrible and this all changes in a matter of moments. Whisky was diagnosed with Kennel Cough yesterday. We thought at first that he was just clearing something out of his throat, but soon realized there was something else going on. Now he's on meds and can't have exposure to other dogs for two whole weeks! He's quarantined.

We're just a regular sick bay over here in the Ball household!

It's Me Or The Dog!

I have a new favorite show in the mornings. It's basically the pet version of "Super Nanny" and it's called "It's Me or the Dog." I think part of the reason I like it is because Whisky hops up in my lap on the couch and watches it with me. As Whisky has gotten older he has grown fond of watching tv. He especially likes animal shows and sports. Show him a football game with cheerleaders waving pompoms and he is glued to the screen. I like to think that he likes watching "It's Me or the Dog" because he likes me to see how well behaved he is and how things could be. The host is named Victoria Stilwell and she always struts in (or cruises up in her convertible) in her all black outfit, hair pulled back, bright red lipstick and typically a red belt. She then proceeds to run the dogs worlds and turn them into well behaved four legged creatures. I like her ALOT more than the whisperer guy. I can't decide if it's due to her accent or her awesome riding boots and how she manages to pull them off with every outfit!

Wedding Quilt

At our wedding we decided we wanted to try and find something that we could use as our guest book. We didn't want to just have a book signed and then tuck it away on a shelf. Keeping with the barn theme we decided to have a wedding quilt made. We had fabric squares out for everyone to sign and then I hired a quilt maker to put it all together for us. I just picked the quilt up in October and I'm soo happy with how it came out. It's funny to read the squares and I plan on having it out in the living room until I am old and grey...or it is old and grey, whichever comes first!

Easy and yummy!

I saw a recipe on Hungry Girl for a lowfat cake that looked super easy. Basically you take this:

and then you add a can of diet soda! I used some Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper. I saw it at the dollar store and although it was disgusting to drink...I thought it might be good in the cake. After you add the can of soda you just stir it up and bake according to the package directions. Let me tell you it was delicious! I can't wait to play around with other sodas.

Freaky Twins?

It was recently discovered that my brother in law, Tom, and I are some sort of freaky twins. Not the cute kind that are born together and share the same parents. We're talking about the kind where something happens to one and the other feels it. Yeah, something like that. Let me explain.

Shortly after I hurt my knee, Tom started having knee pain. He was having a hard time at work and when he went to the doctor is was discovered that he had a meniscus tear. He hadn't had any trauma, the tear just showed up. That is when it all started. Then, moving forward a bit, we all remember about the time when I got an in-grown toenail right? Well, at the same time Tom had one too. He refused to go to the doctor and have his ripped off though! Now, Tom has a slipped disc in his back. It just so happens that on Monday I went to the physical therapist and complained about some cramping I was having and he concluded that a disc in my lower back is most likely slipped. Are you seeing a pattern here? I have to say that I'm feeling a bit nervous because Tom just torn ligaments in his ankle from jumping off of something and is now on crutches and has a grapefruit bruised up ankle. Uh oh....

I'm in love...

I do that alot don't I? Right now I am in love with a dress. Ridiculous I know. I saw this dress in Anthropologie a while back and proceeded to make eye contact with it the whole time I was in the store. This weekend I saw it again in Berkeley. Is it fate that our paths keep crossing or am I just a stalker that is following the dress from town to town? The sad part is that the dress wouldn't fit me. The other sad part is it's over $200. So for now, the dress and I are star crossed lovers. If it goes on sale though I will be buying it and hanging it in my kitchen until I can slip it on.

Have I mentioned that I like Ray?

I got the chance to see Ray Lamontagne live last night and I'm more impressed. There is something amazingly soulful about his voice and his lyrics....they can sometimes knock the wind out of me. If you haven't heard him before, you need to check him out. There are three albums and something amazing about each one. Last night I picked up the vinyl at the show and I can't wait to go home and put it on the turn table! The worst part now is waiting around for the next time Ray shows his rugged lovely face!

I'm a loser!

Well, I managed to make it through two days of Nablopomo without cheating. Today, not so good. In fact, this posting is being written on the 4th, but I'm going to lie and say it's the 3rd. I went to the city and didn't have a laptop, or a fancy www device blogging. I've failed, but I will keep trying for the rest of the month.

Sew cute!

A while back I picked up this old belt at a garage sale. The belt fit around my thigh so I knew it wouldn't work, but it had a great buckle that I was certain I could do something with. A while after that I discovered these wrist cuffs online made out of old neck ties. My mom bought me a neck tie and I've been hanging onto it until I figured out the sewing machine. Yesterday I got the brilliant idea to take the neck tie and the belt buckle and turn it into a new and improved belt!

How awesome is that?! I'm super happy with how it came out and even more proud that I figured out how to sew button holes.

It's that time of year again! Time for Nablopomo, the month of daily blog posts. I know you might be thinking that this shouldn't be tough for me because I blog everyday anyway. Well, that is not so true. See with Nablopomo if it's Monday...I have to blog on Monday. If I blog on Monday for Friday, Sat and Sunday too then it doesn't count. So, celebrate with me and wish me luck in my month log blog venture!
