Two fer one!

I thought since it's Halloween and I haven't followed through with any of my tasks I would go ahead and submit two blog posts today. One that takes me back to my youth and is about someone who didn't quite prepare for Halloween either.

When I was in 7th grade I lived in a condominium complex and on Halloween all of the kids that lived there would go trick or treating to all the other condos. There were alot of condos in there so you always ended up with some good candy.

There was a particularly goofy guy that lived at the end of the complex. He was very short and drove a really fancy schmancy car and always dressed like somewhat of a gigolo. He was accomplishing something though because there always seemed to be a different lovely lady with him in that fancy car.

So, on one Halloween we go laboring upstairs to knock on Mr. Gigolo's door. We can hear music and noise inside so we know someone is there and then we hear a "one minute." We can't wait. All of us are certain that if Mr. Gigolo has such a nice car...then Mr. Gigolo must also pass out good candy. Unfortunately, we were soooo wrong. The door swings open and there stands Mr. Gigolo in one of those short satin robes. It looked a little something like this, only there were no boxers involved....lucky for us it was tied shut at the very least!

There we stand in our costumes, looking at a guy in a flimsy robe and yet he is the one that looks surprised! "Trick or treat" we nervously call out. As if things couldn't get any worse from behind him we hear, "Who's at the door?" Of course we all look to his right and there cozied up on the couch with one boob hanging out (yes, one full view boob) and a sheet draped over the other regions is a hazardly looking female.

"Hey, it's Halloween!" Mr. Gigolo proclaims. "Hold on you guys, I'm sure I have something for you."

This was when we should have run away. Instead I think curiosity got the best of us because we just had to know what this guy could conjure up. As he strolls back to us, in his hands is a box of Nilla wafers. He rips open the box and says, "Let me see your bags kids," and proceeds to dump Nilla wafers into our bags as if he was putting cereal in a bowl.

From this tale we should all learn to stay away from Mr. Gigolo's house on Halloween...or any other night for that matter!

Halloween Procrastinator!

I absolutely love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday to get ready for. I think I even put some decorations out back in September. Once it got closer though I became the biggest procrastinator! I bought my pumpkins a couple days ago and decided that last night was the time to carve. I love carving and try to do really ornate designs. This year I was going to test out the battery powered Dremel to really go hog wild. I was also going to make pumpkin seeds, make cupcakes for the office, help some friends out with a costume and make dinner. Nothing went as planned. The Dremel didn't work and I had no other cutting devices except for Wusthoff knives, which work better for potentially cutting off fingers vs. cutting ornate designs into pumpkins. So my pumpkins are lame. Embarrassing and will not be shown on the blog. I did manage to make the pumpkin seeds....but everything else got left off. No cupcakes, Chinese food lame! Hopefully I'll get better motivated for Christmas or I'm in big trouble!

Hope everyone has a Happy Halloween!

I've decided that for Christmas this year I'm going to try and go Handmade in my gift giving. I'm hoping that at least 75% of my gifts will be handmade by me. The other 25% will be a mix of other's handmade items and probably a couple store items in there. I really just want to try and have as much of a DIY Christmas as I can and help support others that are handmaking items.

This led me to a funny question though. Have any of you received anything handmade for Christmas that was absolutely ridiculous? The kind of thing that made you grit your teeth together while you were thanking the person? Or did you yourself try to give something that was handmade that you knew wasn't up to par? I want to hear your handmade stories....please share!

A little weird!

Sometime in early September the first bags of candy corn start hitting the shelves. I do like myself some candy corn, especially the kind that is shaped like a pumpkin. The good thing about it is I can't eat alot of it. It's so sweet that just a few corns and I'm tapped out. We've had this big bowl of it in my house for a long time and I haven't touched it in almost a month cause I was feeling kind of corned out. That's when I remembered something.

Last night I was making pad thai and had the salted peanuts out. Suddenly a delicious memory hit me! Bear with me here, but first you start with a handful of this:

and then you mix it with a handful of this:

What you get it delicious! I know it sounds weird, but it actually tastes exactly like a Payday. Perfect combo of salty and sweet, but also really rich so you can't eat a ton of it. Go ahead and try it, I bet you will like it!

Farmer Jane

For the past two years there is a house down the street that gives away pumpkins. Last year they had their entire yard lined with them with a free pumpkin sign on Halloween. This year there is a big pile in the yard. They are the cutest small pumpkins with nice long stems. I decided that this year I would grab one. On the sign it said "Free Pumpkins - Thank you from Farmer Jane." So I'm guessing Jane lives there and she grows pumpkins. How sweet is that? I think on Halloween I'm going to put some cupcakes on the porch and write her a little thank you card for the free pumpkins. I'll just say "Thanks Baker Stacey." Will people eat home baked items if they don't know who they are from? Hmmmm.....that's a good and slightly sad question. I guess I might have to knock on the door and introduce myself.

Red nails

I decided this weekend that I really wanted to paint my nails. I had this nice dark polish from OPI and thought it would look good on my short nails. It did, until I took a shower and half of it flaked off! What is it with nail polish on natural finger nails?! I then decided to head to Rite Aid and try to find a polish that would stay on. Revlon used to make one, but apparently it's no longer being carried. So, I took a website recommendation and went with Sally Hansen 10 day nails. This time I went with a bright red. So far so good. I got them painted, slept and took a shower and there's not a chip in site. I'll let you know what day they finally do start chipping. If it's not 10 days Sally Hansen is going to have alot of explaining to do.

As for the photo, I pulled a generic red nail photo off the web because hands don't photograph well. Plus this weekend I learned that I have the hands of an old woman so they are feeling a bit camera shy right now. Watch out though if you decide to search red nail photos on google. That's not all that comes up, and I'm just going to leave it at that (cause you know you just opened another browser to search yourselves!)

Have chalk, will draw.

I decided to update the chalkboard with a new Halloween drawing. I wasn't very impressed with my attempt at drawing a skull and my nephew had drawn all over it so it was in need of some new chalk. I wanted to go with something from the Simpson's since they always have those funny Halloween shows. I decided to go with one of the aliens. I'm much more happy with how this one came out! I really need to get myself some good chalk with better colors though, the chalk I have is so dull and pastelish!

I got my hair colored today and Khyan said that she thought I would look good with straight across bangs. So, I let her give me some straight across bangs. You know what? I love it!

Have your cake, and drink it too!

Recently I got a very exciting opportunity to dust off my baking skills and put them to the test with cupcakes! A new wine is launching called "Cupcake" and they needed some delicious looking cupcakes to use in the photo shoot for their marketing pieces. When I heard about the opportunity I was all over it. This is the sort of thing I love baking for!! I was very pleased with how everything came out and got some of the sample test shots so I could share it all with you! These are three of my favorite shots, don't you just want to lick the chocolate icing right off?! Even though Cupcake wine hasn't officially launched yet, you can find the wine in Cost Plus so be sure to pick up a bottle next time you are there.

I like it!

Sometimes you really like something. Maybe it's the color pink, maybe it's skulls, maybe animals. Sometimes when you really like something you want to tell the whole world what you like. Take this person for example....

I'm just going to wager that this person really likes polka dots! If you are wondering, the ENTIRE car was covered in them..not just this side.

You Don't Know Me

I love Ben Folds and I love Regina Spektor...put them together and of course I'm going to love the song! She has such a charming little voice and Ben, well you have to admit he kind of sounds like a Muppet or Sesame Street character. The video is even more hilarious, and disturbing and hilarious. Since Youtube always mucks around with their videos and they disappear from the posting I will go ahead and put the link as well. CLICK HERE

Da fruit, da fruit, da fruit is on fire!

We don't need no water let the fruity smoothies burn! Ok, I got carried away there for a bit. This morning I had physical therapy at 6am, yes 6am. As I was getting close to the building I noticed a plethora of fire trucks. I couldn't tell exactly but I could see smoke in the air so I knew it was either coming from the Jamba Juice or the Rite Aid. Can you guess which one it was? You got it, Jamba Juice. All I have to say about the fire is that Jamba Juice DOES NOT smell good when it is burning. In fact, all you can smell is the stench of melting plastic cups. Ewwwww!

What a difference a year makes....

It was a year ago today that this happened...
That is a picture of one silly little girl who got herself a little hurt on her honeymoon in Mexico. To understand what a silly little girl she was let's take a look back on how she described this injury a year ago, "Not sure what is wrong with it. Think that something in the knee is torn, but I'll have to deal with that when I get back home. For now I'm just going to figure out how to get around Cabo with a knee brace and muletas!"

Think something in the knee is torn? Are you kidding me! My biggest concern was getting around with a cheesy neoprene brace and crutches. Boy, I had no idea what was really going on. Perhaps I should have let those Dr.'s in Mexico take a closer look at it! No, that's not true cause then I would have been forced on a plane to come back home and I wouldn't give up the pool side margarita service for anything!

Such a grown up!

This picture was taken of Whisky this weekend. It's a funny picture, but made me a little sad all the same. This is the first picture I have seen of Whisky where I thought he didn't look like a puppy anymore. He has such an adult face now! I still want a puppy!

That didn't take long....

I can't do it. I can't up and leave you all. I don't know why. It felt like trying to break up with someone trying to not blog. Something silly would happen and I'd think....I need to tell them all about it! So, what was that one something that broke the camels back? Pillowcases. How ridiculous is that....pillowcases. I made my first item in my sewing class and now I'm ready for Project Runway. Has anyone gone on there just making pillowcases? These pillowcases are the official camping pillowcases. I used a flannel so they would be warm and snuggly. Now everyone is going to get pillowcases for Christmas! Hey now, I hear you all saying that you hope you're not on my list. Jeez!

Pill's Place is going to be taking a hiatus. I'm just not feeling it lately and need a little break. I'm not sure how long that break will be, and if I like it too much I can't guarantee that Pill's Place will come back. I'll try not to leave you hanging for too long though. I'd hate to just end Pill's Place with a picture of this scary monkey!

A song for me?

Yesterday the new Ray Lamontagne album "Gossip in the Grain" hit the stands. Lucky for me my good friend RP pre-ordered it and provided me with the disc last night. I'm standing strong in my belief that Ray is the best lyricist ever. Or at least in my humble opinion. His voice is brilliance, the words are moving and the music is just all around amazing! Definitely different from his last two albums, but that soulful sound is still there. In addition Ray has managed to write songs for more ladies, including Meg White. Ray loves his ladies. Maybe one day Ray will write a song for me, I have the lyrics in my head already!

It's in my genes!

What everyone should know is that I did not just wake up one morning and decide that I was going to be crafty. No, I think I came screaming out of the womb about it! Why? Well, it's in my genes of course! For those of you that don't know my mom let me just tell you that this woman can do anything. She's amazing in the kitchen, she is amazing with a sewing machine, she even messed around with paint brushes for a while. Like me, my mom is an eclectic crafter in the sense that you can give my mom anything crafty and she will figure it out. She doesn't stick to just one craft. On the other hand, she does have a strong suit. That would be a sewing machine!
My mom grew up knowing that she wanted to do things with a sewing machine. Unfortunately she got stuck behind a check stand for too many years and they don't have sewing machines in check stands so it became more of a hobby for her. Now, when I was growing up most of the time I was angry at the sewing machine. I didn't want to touch the sewing machine. I know that seems silly, but see that sewing machine got in the way of things. My mom and I would be shopping and I'd see a shirt that I really liked. Only, Mom would notice that the stripes didn't quite match up so the shirt could not be bought and instead would be "made." We'd head off to the fabric store (much to my dismay) and I would sit in front of a book, pick out a pattern and pick out fabric so I could get my own striped shirt. Problem was, mom wasn't all that good at the follow through back then. In fact, I'm sure if we looked through her sewing supplies we would find all sorts of patterns and fabrics from the 80's and 90's that look like something I might wear then. She was stuck behind a check stand though and there wasn't alot of time. Needless to say I hated the sewing machine because it always told me "I can make that," but it would leave me high and dry. I feel the same way about golf, but that's another posting for another time!
Now, it's the new millennium and my mom is no longer stuck behind a check stand. She retired and ended up starting up her own business making custom drapery. She has made me more items from that sewing machine in the last 5 years than she has in my entire life! The sewing machine is now not a hobby for her but a business and luckily I get to be on the receiving end. Now the sewing machine and I are friends again and I hope to learn a bit more about it myself.
When I went to Texas I took my mom some fabric that I was hoping she would make into a purse. Well, not only did she make me one purse...but she made 4 purses! She has decided that she would like to make some purses and try to sell them in craft shows in Florida. She also might send some my way so I can take them to craft shows and sell them for her. Well, as long as they aren't so cute I want to keep them! Here's a sampling of the purses she made me. The top two are with the fabric I brought her and they both are reversible! The fourth purse is a dog print that I picked out in Texas and is also reversible. The bottom purse is a rose tote with polka dot inside.
Now, is where I need your help. Mom's new purse business needs a name. If a winner is selected from this blog then you will receive one of these purses for your very own! Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more about Mom. Her name is Linda, her nicknames are Linnie, Lulu and Mommy Dearest. Give us your best business names now and you will get your own mom purse, which is a good thing...not to be confused with mom jeans which are a bad thing.

Do you know what today is?

It's our anniversary! No, not yours and mine. Today marks the one year mark for the marriage of Stacey and Bill Ball. It amazes me that a year has gone by and yet at the same time it feels like the longest year ever. I mean, you have to admit, if you've been reading the blog all this time you know it's been one challenging year. If you just started here is a quick recap: get injured, dog dies, car broken into, injury bad, no walking, blood clot, pain, shots, pills, surgery, pain, more shots, more pills, no walking, walking with walker, walking with cane, ghetto limp, toenail removal, lose job. Sounds like good times doesn't it?

The one question I get asked is has marriage changed us. My answer is still no. Has this year changed my relationship? The answer to that is yes. It has nothing to do with marriage though. I think Bill and I waited long enough together that simply putting a ring on my finger didn't change things....except I do have a beautiful shiny ring on my finger. On the other hand, with all the challenges we have faced this year I think it has made our relationship grow even more. I give Bill so much credit for all that he put up with this past year. I know it was tough for me as well, but he did so much to help me out and I couldn't have made it through all of that without him. I love him even more today than I did 1 year ago and I hope I feel that way with each year to come.

Happy One Year Anniversary Bill! Oh, and for those of you (like me) that don't think we should have to start over....this is actually our ten year anniversary together!

I'm Batman

Last night Bill and I went and had an amazing dinner at McCormick and Schmick's and then went and saw Batman at Imax. This was the second time I had seen it and the first time Bill had seen it. I did like the movie both times I have seen it, and still think that Heath Ledger did an amazing job as The Joker. Batman on the other hand kind of annoyed me the second go round. Let's start by saying that Christian Bale is the sexiest Batman we have ever had.....

Ahhh, just look at him. So dashing and dreamy! There is nothing about this guy that I don't like. Well, maybe not how he looked in the Machinist but all other films are pretty yummy. In Batman I just can't deal with his voice! I noticed the over the top Batman voice the first time I saw the movie but the second time it was soooo annoying. It was actually distracting and most of the time I just wanted him to quit talking. I feel like I need to watch the first movie again to see if it was as bad. Oh well, I guess he's good to look at!

I am happy to say that Craftoberfest is finally over! It was a great event and I'm feeling really proud because I think everyone had a good time. There was a slight hitch in the morning with a car parked in the lot and the wind was a bit much at times but it could have been a whole lot worse. I made great money at this event and now have to make a bunch more items if I plan on doing a show anytime soon! I got pretty cleaned out, which is a good thing!
It was also awesome to check out the other crafters and spend some of my money on them. I absolutely love Skeletal Drop Kick's pottery and walked a way with a few pieces for Christmas. There is nothing better than skulls for the holidays!
I also walked away with a ginormous bag of sauces from Oli's Products! Half of them were to keep but the other half were to give away. This stuff is delicious and I can't wait to pour some on some cream cheese and munch away with tortila chips! Thanks to all of those that made it out and all of the other vendors. The show would not have been a success without you!

It's like honey!

Tis the season to share with you one of my favorite favorite things of the fall. Apples! I absolutely LOVE fresh apples. I especially absolutely love Honey Crisp apples. If you haven't had one of these then you haven't lived. They are the perfect combination of sweet and tangy and they are always crispy! They will cost you a bit more, but it is sooooo worth the money. When I have these in my fruit drawer they do not stay long. If you are wondering how they are with baking......better than any apple you have ever tried! Go try one now!

Is it just me...

or are toilets getting shorter? My feeling is that the general public is getting taller, but toilets are getting made shorter. I don't remember toilets being this short and perhaps it's because I have a jacked up knee that won't bend. I swear that sometimes when I go to a public toilet and sit down my my knees are touching my shoulders. I know this is at the very least the second pillsplace posting on toilets, but sometimes that is just where life is headed!

Fullfilled my duty!

I'm happy to say that I have gone to jury duty and I am done with jury duty! I had to report yesterday to the Federal courts and was in the first and final 8 jurors selected for a civil case. I have to say that it was interesting, boring and sad to watch all at the same time. Basically, to put it briefly, a prisoner was suing some officers for using excessive force during an event in which they had to "take him down." Not only that, but the prisoner was representing himself. It went bad pretty quickly and his case just slowly started running down the drain. It was interested to see the legal process, but sad to see this prisoner humiliate himself. I didn't believe his case, but I felt bad for him anyway. Now, my civil duty is over and I have a beautiful certificate to show what a great job I did. I think I will hang it in the bathroom.

Fabric is fun!

Let me just start by saying that I can walk into a Joann's and pretty much do the same thing I do at Target...drop $100. Now that I can actually look at fabric too I have realized that I am in a WHOLE lot of trouble! For my sewing class I needed some supplies so I headed to Joann's to pick out some fabric for my first project, camping pillow cases. It was hard to get out of there without buying fabric for bags, aprons and dresses too! Let's be realistic machine is still in the box. Bill will be getting a lovely fish pillow case made of these three fabrics:

For myself I went with an owl print:

I'll let you know on Thursday if any of this fabric makes it through my learning how to sew torture test!

Sunday, October 05, 2008

I spent a good portion of the day today working on the items for my swag for Craftoberfest. If you forgot about Craftoberfest then let me refresh your memory that it will be Saturday October 11th from 10am to 4pm. For my swag I baked peanut butter dog bones. I'm super pleased with how they came out, and so is Whisky! He is not so happy that 200 of them will be leaving the house.

I can only wish that I could curl up like this and sleep soundly!

Friday, October 03, 2008

Last night I started my 12 week sewing class with my friend Tamie. Both of us are trying to learn how to sew and found this great and cheap class. The first class was good, just basically the overview "About this Class" type of deal. So, now I have to head off to the fabric store to get myself some supplies and fabric for my first big project....pillow cases! I probably should pick this up while I'm at it

Large and in charge!

I got an email yesterday and it was one of those where at first you get really excited and then the more you look at it or think about it you realize it's not so good after all. I'm sure you've all had one of those. This one pertained to Pill's Place and since you are all a part of that I just had to share it with you.

See, I got one of my first "Make some money off of Pill's Place" emails. The email said that it wanted me to do a review on Pill's Place. I would be sent a product and would then write a review on the site and after I write the review I would be paid! My first thought was....that's awesome! I write everyday and these people were handing me something to write about and then would be handing me some money.

Then I went and looked at the product. Here's where things took a turn. The product, penis enhancement! I knew it was too good to be true. I mean come on! For starters I don't even have a penis. Secondly my husband is a little weirded out by the blogging in the first place, he really would freak out if I started writing about how a particular product did or didn't help him.

So, instead I will just share this funny story with you and you can be thankful that I'm not blogging about the size of anyones member. You should also be happy that I decided to do this post without a picture. Yikes!

Best Friend

Today Whisky went to the doggie daycare and apparently he made a best friend. His new best friends name is Heinrich and he's a 5 month old Great Dane. According to the daycare, and Heinrich's mom whom I met this evening, these two couldn't get enough of each other! You can't tell from the pictures!
